Seriously, I can spend hours of hard work drawing the starters and legendaries, yet I'll hardly get any views/comments/faves or make it to the front page, because other people have already had those positions.  

What's the point of even trying in the first place if my work won't get recognized?!?

Drawing to get popular is a fool's errand, it can't really last :T
Just draw stuff you're passionate about and draw it because you want it expressed D:
Even if that means less views, it'd mean more self respect than just trying to be like everyone else to get some peeps to fav your art :c

Alas, I tend to be a whiny pessimist.

I've practiced stuff like anatomy and shading, but I still feel like I can't do it.
The world is slipping me by.

Eh, it happens to every artist, and I do mean EVERY artist.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, improvement is a given through practice. Just looking at the beginning of my gallery contrasted with the LAST thing I drew is rather incredible really. Just draw, and make sure to enjoy it. :)
